Pathways Accomplishments

Pathways at Burnsville High School launched at the start of the 2016-17 school year as part of Vision One91. The program has garnered wide community support and earned local and national awards. Through research and intentional growth, the program has expanded to serve students in PreK-grade 12 and remove barrier so students can find their passion and turn it into their purpose. 
 

2015

Vision One91 Referendums Approved

 

Voters approve Vision One91 referendums and 150,000 square feet are added to Burnsville High School.

 

2016

Pathways Kick-Off

 

Burnsville High School welcomes 9th graders and all seniors on campus together to officially kick off it's Pathways program.

 

2016

Innovative Programming and Learning Spaces

Burnsville High School ‘re-opens’ with innovative programming and learning spaces:

  • Health Careers (8 college-credit classes and Certified Nursing Assistant certificate)

  • Information Technology (Geek Squad Help Desk, App Development)

  • Manufacturing and Engineering courses (opening a new fabrication lab using 3D printers, metal CNC machines, laser cutters, etc)

  • Hospitality Careers (using the BHS kitchen to cater school and community events)

  • Success 191 (new course to help 9th graders transition from middle school and start finding their own pathway)

Pathways Tours

 

Pathways, Partnerships and the Pipeline hosts Pathway tours for more than 110 business and industry partners and realtors.

 

2016

Tech Annex Opens

 

Tech Annex opens, housing the Automotive and Construction Pathways and offering industry-standard automotive learning thanks in part to a $275,000 grant from The Walser Foundation, Walser Automotive Group.

 

2017

Promising Practice Award

 

The National Career Pathways Network recognizes Burnsville High School’s Pathway model with a Promising Practice Award.

 

2017

Local Government Innovation Award

District 191 receives a Local Government Innovation Award (LGIA) from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota for its Finance Pathway and partnership with TruStone Credit Union (formerly Firefly Credit Union).

2018

Business Education Network Created

The Business Education Network is created through a partnership between the Burnsville Chamber of Commerce and District 191. Activities include:

  • Workplace Skills Certificate Program for high school students based on a curriculum called “Bring your A Game to Work” 

  • Student Job Search Workshop to help students learn how to search, apply and interview for jobs 

  • Student Job Fair for local businesses to recruit students for summer, part-time or full-time jobs 

  • Teacher and Counselor Externships for teachers and counselors to experience real world workforce issues inside our local businesses to bring back to their students 

  • Work–based Learning Program is a voluntary opportunity for students to apply the concepts of the Skills Certificate Class in the workplace through a paid work experience

  • Parent Forum & Resource Fair to provide information and resources to parents about current workforce trends and the wide variety of opportunities for their students

Health Careers Expands

 

Health Careers expands to include Emergency Medical Technician national certification, in partnership with Burnsville Fire Department.

Education Pathway Launches

 

The Education Pathway launches through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Education.

Second Local Government Innovation Award

 

District 191 receives a second LGIA for its wall-to-wall Pathway model.

 

2019

Advanced Manufacturing Grant

 

The Department of Labor and Industry provides a $90,000 grant to Advanced Manufacturing for paid work experiences for students.

Grant Support

 

The Greater Twin Cities United Way provides a $295,000 in grant support to the Pathway programs.

200+ Partners Established

More than 200 business, industry and community partnerships are firmly established to support in-class instruction, tours, after-school programs, Pathway events, and donations/grants.

2020

PreK-12 Pathways Expansion

District 191 announces the expansion of the Pathways model to include PreK through grade 12.

2020

Computer Science Grant

Minnesota Department of Labor provides a $234,000 grant to support the computer science pathway in grades 2-5.

2020

Automotive Grant

The Department of Labor and Industry provides a $95,000 grant to the Automotive Pathway for paid work experiences for students.

Gold Star of Innovation Award Winner

Burnsville High School and Principal Dave Helke are selected as Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals as the Gold Star of Innovation Award Winner.
